Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian/American media critic who is also a public speaking event organizer. She is the founder of Feminist Frequency a website that provides commentary and videos on the representation of women in pop cultural. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning feminist journalist from Canada and a blogger. Feminist Frequency investigates how women are represented in pop culture. In her efforts to dispel the myths associated with women in popular culture, she works to highlight issues related to harassment targeted at women and the other marginalized groups of the Internet environment. Sarkeesian, who has a Master's in Political and Social thought from York University, is a popular public speaker. She has given speeches at the TEDxWomen festival as well as United Nations Broadband Working Group for Gender. At a young age Sarkeesian was captivated by issues of gender identity and feminist thought. While still at school in 2009, she created her Feminist Frequency Website. It was a girl with a dream to develop the series of videos on the internet that would examine how gender is represented in video games. However, she became the victim of online harassment. This attack was not enough to deter her. Instead, it made her more committed to being a feminist and a media critique. She is a recipient of several awards for her contributions to feminism. Anita Sarkeesian was a multi-award winning media critic. She was also the director and founder of Feminist Frequency an educational and non-profit organization that explores pop culture gender representations.
